There are Lots of places to visit, Bakewell (Bakewell Tarts), picturesque Dovedale and the stepping stones (4 miles away), Carsington Water, Matlock & Matlock Bath. Pretty village Hartington (with village pond and ducks!!) has its own cheese factory and cheese shop
Plenty of walks i.e., Tissington Trail (you can hire bikes)
Royal Shrovetide (Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday) everyone joins in all shops and businesses close (including schools) except pubs! Everyone joins in a huge football game through the streets. You are either an Upp'ard or Down'ard depending on which side of the river you were born, or who your family supports. Goals are three miles apart and are millstones in the river. Brilliant atmosphere in our pub, wonderful cameraderie. Shrovetide has the royal seal because a royal has to turn the ball up at least every 75 years. Prince Charles turned the ball up in 2003.
Every July we have the Highland Gathering which is a mini highland games on the park. Geoff Capes visits and tosses the caber. Pipe bands from all over the country compete culminating in a march through the streets at the end of the day (6pm).

There is a pig roast and a small market. Other fairground rides are situated in the streets all around Ashbourne along with market stalls.
